Academic Conferences 2017

Wednesday 17th May 2017

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers

Wellington College continues to review the methods we use to communicate our students’ academic progress and performance. Many of you will be familiar with the Goal Setting Days and the online reporting systems that we now use. After much research and staff discussion, we are making some further changes to our reporting and communication systems.

In 2017, we are replacing the Goal Setting Day and Parent Teacher evenings with two Academic Conferences. We feel that the Parent-Teacher meetings have become more like a “speed dating” event; there is just time enough to say hello to a teacher before having to move to the next on the list! Certainly, at the senior level, fewer and fewer parents are attending each year.

The academic conferences will be 15 minute, one-on-one meetings between tutor, student and parent – the first will take place early in Term 2 and the second towards the end of Term 3. At the first meeting, the student’s first term report, his academic performance thus far, his attendance, his pastoral care record and his goals will be discussed. The student will be expected to make a plan of action to enhance his academic attainment, and his tutor will give parents feedback during the year as to how he is progressing with this. At the second meeting, the student’s progress and his second set of reports will be reviewed. This second conference is deliberately placed before the practice external examinations so students and parents can still make meaningful changes, if necessary. Unlike the previous Goal Setting Days, where the Tutor conferenced with several students and parents at one time, the new Academic Conferences will be conducted privately between the Tutor and one family group.

We believe this to be an exciting new initiative that will enhance the academic performance of our students. As with any new initiative we will review these changes at the end of 2017.

So please make note of the dates of these Academic Conferences. They are 17 May and 30 August. More information with regards to bookings will be sent out closer to these dates.
